NHS pay deal in England accepted

Following a meeting of the NHS Staff Council on May 2, a majority of trade unions have voted to accept the government’s pay offer to NHS staff in England.

The pay rise, offered by government following months of strikes in the NHS, is expected to be paid in time for the June pay round. On top of the £1400 already implemented, NHS workers in England will now also receive:

  • A one-off lump sum payment varying per pay band; and
  • A 5% permanent salary increase backdated to April 1, 2023
Commenting on the outcome of the dispute, Jon Restell, Chief executive of MiP said:

“Following yesterday’s NHS Staff Council vote, the government must now implement this pay rise as soon as possible.”

“NHS staff have waited a long time to reach this point. The government could have prevented so much hardship, for patients and for staff, if they opened negotiations last year when it was clear the original award would not be accepted. It was only through the resilience of members and colleagues throughout the NHS, and their willingness to take action, that this additional investment was secured.

“We know there is still much work to do to resolve the staffing crisis in the NHS and ensure that its workforce is paid fairly for the vital work they do each day. But what this deal proves is that industrial action works and we now have a strong basis to build on.

“We continue working towards a safely staffed NHS that’s fit for both patients and staff. In the meantime, we will work with government and employers to ensure members receive this pay rise as quickly as possible.”
