Managing Our NHS

Campaigning for managers

As the NHS grapples with the biggest patient backlog in its 75 year history, more and more evidence is highlighting how NHS managers are ideally placed to start reversing the trend. The Managing Our NHS campaign will tell the story of those managers, right at the heart of the NHS, who are making the health service

Recognition and support for the work managers do

Managers are too often overlooked and undervalued, but without them clinicians would spend all of their time with paperwork, not doing what they do best – caring for patients.

Managers are experts at delivering change and finding solutions to complex problems. Our campaign will engage politicians, the media, NHS employers and the public to highlight how this skillset is needed now more than ever as patients struggle to access services.

Inspirational stories about real people

We know how much your role impacts the quality of patient care. But only NHS managers themselves can relay this to a wider audience. We’ll amplify your story – showing how everything you do leads to better services for patients and better support for staff.

Managing Our NHS

The case for managers

Many believe that for every NHS manager that means one less doctor or nurse. But this isn’t the case.

The number of managers hasn’t kept relative pace with the number of overall staff in the NHS.

This has led to more and more doctors, nurses and other clinical colleagues being taken away from their patient-facing roles in the NHS to plug gaps being left by undermanagement.

This leads to burnout in clinical colleagues who have to pick up extra work outside their normal role. It leads to longer waits for patients as their carers are stuck doing paperwork.

It’s counter-productive and undermines efforts to bring down the backlog.

More clinicians are essential to start resolving this issue. But failing to invest in a strong managerial resource alongside it means this gap that currently exists will continue to grow, preventing doctors and nurses doing what they do best – treating and caring for patients.
