 Unison victory

UNISON's tribunal fee verdict is a victory for everyone in work

MiP congratulates UNISON on its landmark win in the supreme court

‘This is a stunning win for access to justice and working people. If you still need proof trade unions are important in this country this is it. Without UNISON’s tenacious campaign in the courts, the regressive policy on tribunals fees would have remained with us.’

Government to review pay for managers in NHS “arm’s length” bodies

The government has agreed to a 1% pay award for senior managers working in arm’s length bodies (ALBs) of the Department of Health, after accepting the recommendations of the 2017 report from the Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB). Ministers also agreed to review the remit of the review body, in a move that could see its jurisdiction extended to very senior managers across the whole NHS.

Restell calls for PM's salary benchmark to be scrapped

MiP chief executive Jon Restell has called for the next government to "retire" the policy of using the Prime Minister's salary as a benchmark for senior NHS pay, after the Health Service Journal revealed that the Treasury has approved more than 90% of requests to pay senior NHS managers more than Theresa May's £142,500 pay packet.

MiP introduces local “reps” to boost support for members

MiP Chief executive Jon Restell outlines the union’s plan to build a network of MiP reps in workplaces across the UK.

MiP will pilot a new active member role, the “MiP representative”, throughout the rest of 2017. The new role has grown out of ‘advanced practice’ from our existing MiP link members and responds to the growing demand from some of them for more responsibility for the individual and collective representation of members.

NHS Pay Review Body Report 2017 - MiP response

The union for senior NHS managers responds to yesterday's report and government announcement

MiP believes a pay award of 1% fails to value the hard work, goodwill and commitment of NHS managers and other staff, who are caring for patients under intense and growing pressure. It fails to match inflation, running at more than twice the level of the award, and fails miserably to respond to the rise in private sector average earnings of 3.1%.

NHS Pay Review Body 2017: MiP Briefing Note

In its 2017 report, the review body supports MiP’s long-held view that the government needs an exit strategy from its current NHS pay policy. It warns that the 1% cap on pay rises in the NHS is coming under pressure due to rising inflation, significant supply shortages in some areas, and concerns about recruitment and retention which are shared by unions and employers.

 UCLH

London callings

With NHS pay frozen, it’s becoming ever harder to recruit nurses and midwives in the capital. But at UCLH, managers have transformed the trust’s recruitment operation – and cut the vacancy rate by more than half. Matt Ross reports.

“We’d enjoyed quite good times,” recalls Julie Hogg, the trust’s deputy chief nurse. “Then we got a little bit behind the game: we’d been living on our brand, and recruitment hadn’t had the energy and focus that it needed. Other organisations began attracting people who we might have brought in.”

Our NHS depends on managers like Sandie

MiP Conference 2016: Chief executive Jon Restell told delegates the very survival of the NHS depends on managers working under intense pressure and walking a tightrope between compassion and resources.

Most people would walk away from being a middle manager in our NHS… They couldn’t face the responsibility of making decisions which mean so much to the lives and survival of other human beings. But this what Sandie does, day in, day out.
