This deal is only the start

Commenting on today’s union ballot results, which showed members were strongly in favour of accepting the government's three-year pay deal for most NHS staff in England, MiP chief executive Jon Restell said:

"This deal ends the government’s cap of 1% on NHS pay increases – a policy that was making it much harder to recruitment and retain NHS staff. The investment of £4.2 billion in pay is substantial, enabling long-serving NHS staff – including many managers – to get the above inflation pay rise they deserve. MiP is proud to have played a part in making this happen, and will carry on speaking up for managers and their valuable role in patient care."

"This deal is only a start. The long-term funding plan for the NHS, to be announced soon by the prime minister, will need to include sustained investment in pay and the NHS workforce. MiP endorsed the three-year deal with reservations about the capping of awards for members at the top of bands 8D and 9 and the failure to invest in speeding up progression for senior staff. We will keep returning to these issues."

"Our focus now moves to securing parallel deals for members in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – and for NHS directors in England, who are not covered by the Agenda for Change pay system.”
