Sexual orientation monitoring of service users

Get involved in focus groups to support roll-out of sexual orientation monitoring

NHS England is working with the LGBT Foundation and National LGB&T Partnership to make sure that healthcare services collect information on service users’ sexual orientation and use this to improve services.  An information standard has been agreed and will be introduced from April 2017.  MiP members will have an important role in making this work.

Research shows that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people experience health inequalities compared to heterosexual people, such as being at higher risk of poor mental health, or missing out on routine health screening.  By collecting information on patient sexual orientation, healthcare services will be able to target specific health promotion and services to them.

Workforce training will be part of the implementation.  Members are encouraged to attend focus groups to develop e-learning resources to support roll-out.  The focus groups, hosted by Health Education England, are in Leeds on 21 March, Birmingham on 22 March and London on 27 March.
