Invest in skills of line managers to tackle poor performance

MiP welcomes the results of the King’s Fund 2014 survey of NHS leadership

Speaking after the launch of the survey, MiP chief executive Jon Restell said:

‘Leadership is vital in healthcare and it is important to keep on weighing and measuring it, which is why MiP partners with the King’s Fund to support their survey each year. We strongly support the idea of collective leadership. Leadership is needed in all staff groups, not just managers, and we need to nurture leaders in every nook and cranny.’

‘Staff clearly want poor behaviour and performance tackled by their organisations. Tolerance for disruptive colleagues is falling sharply as pressures on time, resources and quality grow and grow. We need to invest urgently in the skills of line managers so they can nip problems in the bud, embrace difficult conversations and challenge poor performance.’

‘Better views of leadership among staff, compared to last year, is good news and means the focus on leadership is working. But there is a gap – also identified in the NHS staff survey- between the views of doctors and nurses and executives – a gap that needs bridging through better communications.’
